The River Is Different This Year. Here’s Why That’s Not a Bad Thing.

For many people, the words “high water” sound exciting when talking about whitewater rafting. Huge waves, powerful currents, and roaring rapids certainly make for dramatic photos. But for most families, first-time rafters, and anyone looking for a fun day on the river, Colorado’s unusually mild runoff this season has created some surprisingly ideal conditions.

Instead of the Arkansas River running high and pushy through early summer, flows have stayed moderate and manageable. That means sections that are often dominated by fast-moving water are now more channelized, easier to read, and more enjoyable for a wider range of guests.

One section that has benefited from these conditions is our Bear Creek trip.

The Bear Creek Section Is In a Sweet Spot

Bear Creek is normally one of our favorite early-season family trips, but during big runoff years it can feel a little more powerful and technical. This season, however, the river has settled into a really fun rhythm.

The rapids are still there. You’ll still get splashed. You’ll still paddle through fun whitewater and hear plenty of laughter from your raft.

What you won’t find are intimidating waves or overwhelming rapids.

Instead, the river is delivering exactly what many guests are looking for:

  • Fun splashy rapids
  • Beautiful mountain scenery
  • Cool water on a warm summer day
  • Plenty of opportunities to relax between rapids
  • A great experience for families and first-time rafters

It’s the kind of rafting day where everyone can enjoy the ride instead of worrying about the next rapid.

More Time to Enjoy the Scenery

One of the hidden benefits of lower water is that guests often notice more of what’s around them.

The Bear Creek section winds through a beautiful stretch of the Upper Bighorn Sheep Canyon. With the river running at moderate levels, it’s easier to take in the surrounding mountains, changing geology, spot wildlife, and enjoy the peaceful sections between rapids.

You’ll still get the excitement of rafting, but you’ll also get to appreciate why so many people fall in love with this river.

Great Conditions for Families

Every year we talk to parents who are nervous about rafting for the first time with their kids. This season has been perfect for those families.

The river still feels adventurous, but it isn’t overwhelming. Kids get the thrill of bouncing through rapids, getting splashed, and paddling as a team without the intensity that can come during peak runoff years.

For many families, these are the kinds of rafting conditions they’ve been looking for.

A Different Kind of Perfect

While some experienced paddlers chase huge runoff and massive waves, most people simply want a fun day outdoors with friends and family.

That’s exactly what this season has delivered.

Good scenery. Cool water. Fun rapids. Plenty of smiles.

If you’ve been thinking about trying rafting but were worried it might be too intense, this may be one of the best summers to get out on the river and see what it’s all about.

Bear Creek is running beautifully, and we’d love to share it with you.
