Bear Creek is what we recommend when a mellow float sounds a little too mellow, but your group does not need the bigger commitment of a full Class III canyon run.
This stretch of the Arkansas River mixes splashy Class II and III rapids with red-rock canyon scenery, calmer stretches and enough variety to make the trip feel like a complete river adventure.
It is especially good for adventurous families, younger rafters ready for their first real rapids, first-time adults and mixed groups where everyone wants some excitement without feeling overwhelmed.

FUN RAPIDS
Class II-III rapids bring waves, rocks and plenty of paddling, but there is still time between them to regroup and enjoy the river.
RED-ROCK CANYON
Bear Creek trades the open Salida Valley for a more enclosed river corridor with rocky walls, rugged slopes and a distinctly different landscape.
FAMILY SWEET SPOT
Kids and adults get enough whitewater to feel like they really went rafting while the overall trip remains manageable for most first-timers.
HALF DAY OR FULL DAY?
The half-day already covers a substantial stretch of river. Go full-day when you want more miles, more rapids and a riverside lunch without rushing the experience.
HALF DAY
Roughly nine miles of Arkansas River with playful rapids, red-rock scenery and more than two hours on the water. It is a genuine half-day river trip, not a quick splash through a couple of rapids.
FULL DAY
Keep going beyond the half-day experience with additional river miles, more whitewater and time to stop for a relaxing guide-prepared lunch along the Arkansas River.
THE RAPIDS OF BEAR CREEK
Bear Creek is a varied stretch of river rather than a nonstop rapid sequence. Named rapids are mixed with scenic stretches, smaller wave trains and places where the whole river slows down.
SILVER HEELS
One of the recognizable rapids on this run, Silver Heels brings moving current, rocks and splashy waves that get everyone working together.
BEAR CREEK RAPID
The namesake rapid adds another dose of Class II-III whitewater and gives the section some of its playful, technical character.
SPIDER RAPID
Another fun rapid farther downstream where rocks, current and changing lines keep the guide busy and the crew paddling.
RED-ROCK CORRIDOR
Between rapids the river passes rugged rocky slopes and canyon walls that give this section a distinctly different feel from the wide-open Salida Valley.
SWIM & EXPLORE
When river conditions allow, calmer stretches can create opportunities to cool off, swim and spend a little more time actually enjoying the river.
CONSTANT VARIETY
Waves give way to quiet water, then another rapid appears around the bend. That variety is one of the reasons we like guiding this stretch so much.

Lower water does not automatically mean worse rafting. It means choosing the right stretch of river matters more.
Bear Creek is one of our favorite sections when Arkansas River flows begin dropping because the run remains varied, technical and fun while still providing a substantial amount of time on the water.
Instead of trying to force every group onto the most recognizable river section, we would rather recommend the trip that is actually running well when you are here.

Yes. Bear Creek is a great first whitewater trip for guests who want more excitement than a scenic float. Your guide teaches the basics and provides a full safety briefing before you reach the main rapids.
What is the minimum age?
Bear Creek is generally available for ages 6 and older. Minimum ages can change when river conditions require it.
How does Bear Creek compare with Browns Canyon?
Bear Creek is generally a step down in difficulty, with a mix of Class II and III rapids rather than the more sustained Class III experience in Browns Canyon. It is a great choice for younger families or groups wanting a slightly more approachable trip.
Is Bear Creek good when river levels are low?
It can be an excellent choice. Bear Creek remains varied and engaging at lower flows and gives us a substantial stretch of river to work with. Conditions change, so we are always happy to recommend the section we think will provide the best trip on your date.
What should I wear?
Wear quick-drying clothing that can get wet and avoid cotton in cooler conditions. We provide wetsuits, splash jackets and river shoes when needed at no additional rental charge.

Monumental Expeditions trips meet at our rafting office inside Chalk Creek Campground in Nathrop, conveniently located between Salida and Buena Vista. Please arrive about 30 minutes before your scheduled trip.
