If you are planning a Colorado rafting trip, one of the first practical questions is simple: how much does whitewater rafting cost?
For most guided half-day rafting trips in Colorado, current starting prices commonly fall around $90 to $125 per person. Full-day trips often run about $140 to $200 or more, depending on the river section, trip length, lunch, gear, and any added fees.
On the Arkansas River near Buena Vista and Salida, the price can vary quite a bit even when two companies are rafting the same stretch of river.
At Monumental Expeditions, our currently published Browns Canyon prices start at $105 per person for a half-day and $180 per person for a full-day trip. Standard rafting gear is included, and we do not add hidden taxes or mandatory booking fees to the advertised trip price.
Prices in this guide were checked in October 2026. Always confirm the current rate on the individual trip page when you book.
What Is the Average Cost of Whitewater Rafting in Colorado?
There is no single statewide rafting price because Colorado trips range from mellow family floats to advanced Class IV and V whitewater, and from short outings to full-day and multi-day adventures.
For the type of guided day trip most vacationers are comparing, a useful general range is:
- Half-day rafting: about $90 to $125 per person
- Full-day rafting: about $140 to $200+ per person
- Private rafting: usually considerably more, because the raft and guide are reserved for one group
Those numbers are only a starting point. A lower advertised price is not automatically the least expensive trip once mandatory fees and equipment charges are added.
How Much Does Browns Canyon Rafting Cost?
Browns Canyon is one of the best places to compare prices because several outfitters run guided trips through the same national monument.
At Monumental Expeditions, our Browns Canyon rafting trips currently start at:
- Half-day Browns Canyon: $105 per person
- Full-day Browns Canyon: $180 per person
The half-day trip includes about 2.5 hours of river time, depending on water level and conditions. The full-day trip provides about five hours on the river and includes lunch.
Browns Canyon is Class III whitewater under normal conditions and is a popular choice for adventurous families and first-time rafters. Our normal minimum age is 7, although minimum ages can change when river conditions require it.
What Does a Rafting Price Actually Include?
This is where comparing outfitters becomes more useful than simply sorting by the lowest number.
Ask what is included before you book.
At Monumental Expeditions, the standard river gear needed for your trip is included. Depending on the section and conditions, that includes:
- Personal flotation device
- Helmet when appropriate
- Paddle
- Wetsuit farmer John
- Splash jacket
- River booties
- Sunglass retainer
- Transportation needed for the rafting trip
You do not need to show up with your own wetsuit or pay another rental charge just because the Arkansas River is cold.
You can see more about what we provide on our rafting gear page.
Do Rafting Companies Add Fees at Checkout?
Some do.
Depending on the outfitter, the price shown on a trip page may not include every mandatory charge. Additional costs can include booking fees, access fees, taxes, equipment rentals, or other required charges.
That does not necessarily mean the company is overpriced. It simply means you should compare the final total, not just the headline rate.
Monumental Expeditions keeps pricing straightforward. We do not add hidden taxes or mandatory booking fees to the advertised trip price, and the standard rafting gear we provide is included.
If two trips look close in price, run them all the way through the booking process before deciding which one is actually less expensive.
How Much Would Rafting Cost for a Family of Four?
Using Monumental’s current Browns Canyon starting prices as an example:
- Half-day Browns Canyon: 4 guests × $105 = $420
- Full-day Browns Canyon: 4 guests × $180 = $720
Those examples assume four guests at the published starting price. Your actual total depends on the trip and date you select.
For families, this is one reason included equipment matters. Four wetsuit, splash jacket, and river shoe rentals can change the total quickly if another outfitter charges separately for them.
Is a Half-Day Rafting Trip Worth It?
For many first-time rafters, yes.
A half-day trip is not a watered-down version of rafting. On a section such as Browns Canyon, you still run genuine Class III whitewater, paddle as a crew, get wet, and experience the canyon from the river.
The advantage is that you do not have to give up your entire day.
A half-day trip works especially well if your Colorado vacation also includes hot springs, hiking, camping, exploring Buena Vista or Salida, or another activity later in the day.
For families with younger children, first-time rafters, or groups with mixed enthusiasm levels, a half-day can be the best value because it gives you a substantial experience without paying for more river time than everyone wants.
Is a Full-Day Rafting Trip Worth the Extra Cost?
It can be, especially if rafting is one of the main reasons you came to the Arkansas River Valley.
On a full-day trip, you are paying for more river time, more miles, additional logistics, and typically lunch.
Our full-day Browns Canyon trip gives you about five hours on the river and includes a riverside lunch.
If your group loves being outside and wants rafting to be the centerpiece of the day, that additional time can be worth the higher price.
If you mainly want to experience Colorado whitewater and still have half the day free, the half-day option may be the smarter purchase.
Does a Higher Price Mean a Better Rafting Trip?
Not automatically.
On the Arkansas River, multiple outfitters often run the same river section. The rapids do not change because one company charges more.
What changes is the experience around the river.
When comparing companies, look at:
- How much actual river time you get
- Whether required gear is included
- Whether mandatory fees are added later
- Trip size and overall group size
- Whether lunch is included on full-day trips
- How much help you get choosing the right river section
- The experience level and style of the outfitter
A larger outfitter may have amenities or facilities that matter to you. A smaller outfitter may offer a more personal experience.
There is no single correct business model. The question is what you value.
What Do You Get With a Smaller Rafting Company?
Monumental Expeditions is intentionally small.
We are a family-run company based at Chalk Creek Campground in Nathrop, between Buena Vista and Salida. We typically take no more than 24 guests on a trip, and the owner is often one of the guides on the river.
That does not change the Class III rapids in Browns Canyon, but it changes how the day feels.
Smaller groups make it easier to answer questions, work with nervous first-timers, and help families choose a trip that actually fits the people coming with them.
With more than 25 years of guiding experience, we would rather recommend an easier section than put someone on a trip they are unlikely to enjoy.
You can read more about why we operate this way in Why Our Arkansas River Rafting Trips Cost Less and Deliver More.
Does the Difficulty of the River Affect the Price?
Sometimes, but difficulty is not the only factor.
At Monumental Expeditions, we offer four main Arkansas River experiences:
Salida Valley
Salida Valley is our mellowest trip, with Class I-II water and a normal minimum age of 5. It is a good fit for younger families, nervous first-time rafters, and groups that care more about being on the river than chasing bigger rapids.
Bear Creek
Bear Creek steps things up with Class II water and smaller Class III rapids. Its normal minimum age is 6.
Browns Canyon
Browns Canyon is the classic Class III Arkansas River trip and our most popular option for adventurous families and first-time rafters.
The Numbers
The Numbers is our advanced Class IV trip, with a normal minimum age of 16. It is more continuous and physically demanding than Browns Canyon.
The best value is not always the cheapest trip. It is the trip that matches your group well enough that everyone finishes the day glad they went.
Should You Budget for a Guide Tip?
Guide gratuity is generally not included in the advertised trip price.
Tipping is customary in the rafting industry but voluntary. If your guide does an excellent job, a tip is a welcome way to show appreciation.
When setting your vacation budget, it is reasonable to leave room for an optional gratuity in addition to the cost of the trip.
How Can You Save Money on a Colorado Rafting Trip?
The most effective way to save money is to buy the trip you actually need.
- Choose a half-day if your group does not need a full day on the river.
- Compare the final checkout total, not just the advertised starting price.
- Look for included wetsuits, splash jackets, and river footwear.
- Avoid paying for a harder trip simply because it sounds more impressive.
- Choose a river section that fits the ages and comfort level in your group.
A trip that costs slightly less but is wrong for your family is not a bargain.

It depends on the outfitter. Monumental Expeditions includes wetsuits, splash jackets, river booties, PFDs, paddles, helmets when appropriate, and sunglass retainers with the trip.
Are there hidden rafting fees?
Some outfitters add mandatory access, booking, or other charges during checkout. Monumental Expeditions does not add hidden taxes or mandatory booking fees to its advertised trip price.
Is Browns Canyon rafting worth the cost?

Is half-day or full-day rafting a better value?
Half-day rafting is often the better value for first-time rafters and families that want time for other activities. A full-day trip makes more sense when rafting is one of the main reasons for your visit and you want substantially more river time.
Do kids cost less to go rafting?
Child pricing varies by outfitter and trip. Check the live booking price for your selected date rather than assuming every company offers a separate youth rate.
Is transportation to the river included?
Guided rafting trips normally include the shuttle transportation required for that specific trip. Monumental Expeditions handles the transportation needed between our meeting location and the river access points.
Compare the Total Value, Not Just the Price
When you compare Colorado rafting trips, look beyond the first number you see.
Consider the river section, actual time on the water, included gear, mandatory fees, group size, and how much personal attention you want from the outfitter.
Monumental Expeditions keeps the experience simple: small groups, included river gear, straightforward pricing, and no hidden fees.
