FAQ

Everything you need to know before your Arkansas River rafting trip with Monumental Expeditions.

Before You Go

We know planning a rafting trip can bring a lot of questions, especially if it’s your first time rafting in Colorado. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we receive about rafting trips, camping, what to bring, water levels, kids, dogs, and more.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Which rafting trip is appropriate for me?

Choose based on the age, comfort level, swimming ability, and fitness of everyone in your group. Salida Valley is the mellowest, Bear Creek is a step up, Browns Canyon is our most popular Class III trip, and The Numbers is for strong, adventurous guests ages 16+.

What should I bring with me?

Bring quick-dry clothing, sunscreen, water, secure footwear, and any important medications. Avoid cotton. Leave towels and dry clothes in the car for after the trip. We provide wetsuits, splash jackets, and river shoes when needed.

Where do we meet?

Meet at our office at Chalk Creek Campground: 11430 CR 197, Nathrop, CO 81236.

Do I need to be able to swim?

No. We offer trips that are appropriate for non-swimmers and younger kids. Contact us if you are unsure which trip is best for your group.

Are there size requirements for children and adults?

Children need to fit safely in our life jackets. Youth life jackets generally require at least 50 lbs, with x-small youth jackets available for some trips starting around 35 lbs. Adult life jackets fit up to a 55-inch chest. Guests over 300 lbs should contact us before booking.

Is paddling required or can I just ride and hold on?

We can run paddle rafts or oar rafts. Paddle rafts involve more guest participation, while oar rafts allow guests to ride with less paddling. Contact us if you prefer an oar raft.

What do the rapid ratings Class I-VI mean?

Rapid classes describe difficulty, from Class I moving water to Class V very difficult whitewater. Class VI is considered extreme and unpredictable. Ratings can change with water levels.

What does CFS mean?

CFS means cubic feet per second. It measures how much water is flowing in the river. Higher CFS usually means bigger, faster, and more powerful rapids.

Will photos be taken of our rafting trip?

Trip photos are usually taken by a separate photography company and are available for purchase online. Some guides may also take photos and share them with your group when possible.

There is a minor traveling with us who is not our child; what do we need to do?

A parent or legal guardian must complete the waiver for that minor before the trip. You can use our online waiver or bring a completed printed waiver to check-in.

Does Monumental Expeditions offer customized trips?

Our trips run on a set schedule, but because we are a small company, we can often accommodate special requests. Contact us and we’ll see what is possible.

How do I reserve my Monumental Expedition?

You can book online from our raft trips page or contact us directly and we’ll help you choose and reserve the right trip.

What is your cancellation policy?

Reservations are subject to a 14-day cancellation policy. Cancellations inside 14 days are not refundable and may be held as a rain check, less processing fees. No-shows and cancellations within 24 hours do not receive refunds or rain checks. Trips run rain or shine.

There is a dog traveling with me. Is there a doggie daycare?

We recommend Gone to the Dogs in Salida and Buena Vista. We may also be able to bring your dog on select trips. Contact us for details.

What is your rafting season?

Our season runs from spring through mid-September. Spring runoff usually brings colder, faster, bigger water, while summer flows are often more moderate and still a lot of fun.
